Where are X-Ray Spex when I need them?

So there's this thread coursing through the web right now about identity and what's appropriate online and who should be trusted and who shouldn't and why (and aren't we the shit for nailing some pathetic woman to the wall for fooling us all). First there was Kaycee, then I read about this guy in the Register, then David Manning, then this showed up on Yahoo! and demonstrates the danger in just being yourself. Is it too easy to talk to each other? This seems like a re-hash of similar stuff from back in the days of AOL 1.2 when people were worried about the breaking down of social structures through immediate communication and we (those involved in the new communication) scoffed and said "People will adapt. They adapted to the automobile and to television. They'll adapt to email." Well have we? It doesn't seem like people have really changed, they just have a larger arena in which to be stupid.
