Record of the Week

I always play this loud at Halloween to scare the children and adults that come by the house... and myself..
It's actually a favorite record that I love blasting any time of the year. Diamanda would no doubt be offended that I would call her work "scary" or "halloweeny", but I think that actually gives props (as the kids say) to her for wrangling the true fear and dread out of the pop, blues, and gospel standards she performs here.
Either way it's a powerful and freaky record that must be heard at top volume! I once leant it to an unsuspecting friend; she returned it within a few minutes, and she had made quotations marks with post-its around the word "Singer." Those post-it quotes are still there..!

G.W.C.
So, I've been playing off and on with a group of folks (actually, the ex-members of Guardez Lou) under the moniker G.W.C. (short for George Washington Clusterfuck). We finally played our first "gig" last Saturday, which was a harmonica picnic that Al (the bass player/studio owner)'s neighbor was holding.
The scenario: Drunk bikers whose musical tastes run the gambit of blues, blues, blues, and blues related country. Here's what we dished them, with one of the in house harmonica players sitting in. As an added bonus, one of the 5 dogs present barks continually throughout the set. All in all, it was enjoyable as hell to play live again, and some of the bikers were dancing to the more punk sounding stuff. Enjoy!!!

Another Book Review
I'm sure everyone's already read it, but I still have to recommend "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris.
I've been a fan of his ever since I read "Barrel Fever", and this book just added fuel to the fire for me. Funny as hell, self mocking, insightful, my list of decriptives could go on... If you don't have it, get it!

2 Records of the Week:
Neutral Milk Hotel: 1] One Avery Island 2] In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
I guess this group has been around for awhile, and people have raved about them since their beginnings, but I just got these records on Friday, and I love them both. Emotional, surrealist pop/folk/psych/collage, anyway both records are great.
Here's some words by other people:

I'm currently
reading this. I'm glad to see somebody finally wrote a book on them. I still remember the first time I heard the song "Persuasion" and how dirty I felt afterwards.
I borrowed the book from a guy at work who has legally changed his name to Ferrara Brain Pan. I'm thinking about having my name changed...too bad Cher is taken.

Converging
Lyrics from "Full Metal Jackoff", a song from Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors (the Jello Biafra/D.O.A. joint -- another CD that I've turned into mp3s in the last couple of weeks). Especially in light of the comics that Phil has posted, I like the parallels that can be drawn between the Drug War and the War on Terrorism.
Around our nation's capital
There's a freeway 8 lanes wide
White concrete ringed around the city
For those who want inside
Get on get off
Ignore everything to the sides
In your midst I drive
While homeboys in the back of the van make drugs
Wanna hide something like a crack lab
Just put it in plain sight
Only stop to refuel and unload
More poison to tear more lives apart
Gang wars like never before
Better lock your doors, buy some guns
And pray for martial law
On the Washington D.C. Beltway
Around and around I go
In the black van with no windows
And a chimney puffing smoke
Bloody headlines in the news each day
Drug "crisis" everywhere
So much comes in so easily
It's as though someone wants it there
It would be a little obvious
To fence off all the slums
Hand out machine guns
to the poor in the projects
And watch 'em kill each other off
A more subtle genocide is when
The only hope for the young
Is to join the Army and slowly die
Wall Street or Crack Dealer Avenue
The last roads left to the American Dream
Wall Street or Crack Dealer Avenue
Wall Street or Crack Dealer Avenue
Only on road leads to this neighborhood
Little kids wanna sell drugs when they grow up
The folks might get just a little upset
If they knew where that dope comes from
Froom Columbia to the Contras
To our Air Force bases, where we trade it for guns
The moral equivilent of a serial killer
And his CIA friends
Call the shots from the White House
But now that we own the media too
Those stories just aren't run
On the Washington D.C. Beltway, 'round and 'round I go
In a black van with no windows, and a chimney puffing smoke
Same gang that ran smack in Viet Nam
Ain't got no reason to fear
Just get a Vice President so dumb
The crook at the top never gets impeached
That sure was easy wasn't it?
That sure was easy wasn't it?
More crack-more panic-moe cops-more jails
You see emergency-total war
You see emergency-total war
You see a black face-you see a crackhead
You see a black face-you see a crackhead
You see a black face-you see Willie Horton with a knife
You see Willie Horton with a knife
You see one Willie Horton you've seen them all
They're everywhere, I know
You asked for it, you've got it
Drug suspects have no rights at all
Property seized and sold before trial
Labor camps-on American soil?!?
Neo-Nazi bootboys
That the cops never seem to arrest
Prowl neighborhoods with baseball bats
Why now? Why do they get so much press...?
Mein Kampf-the mini series
Ollie North-"patriotic" hero
The leader for tomorrow is yours today
Finally gotcha psyched for a police state
On the Washington D.C. Beltway
Around and around I go
In a black van with no windows
And a chimney puffing smoke
My van's a mobile oven now
That burns the bodies you never see
Just like in Chile or Guatemala
People just seem to disappear
Just like Rome
We fell asleep when we got spoiled
Ignore human rights in the rest of the world
Ya might just lose your own
As the noose of narco-militarism
Tightens 'round your necks
We worry about burning flags
And pee in jars at work
To keep our jobs
But if someone came for you one night
And dragged you away
do you really think your neighbors
Would even care....
Ollie for president, he'll get things done!!!
Ollie for president, he'll get things done!!!
Ollie for president, he'll get things done!!!

So, I was sent this survey at work today. I decided that for them to really get a picture of the company, I should freely distribute it amongst my friends (as people who work on the floor can't afford computers, let alone find time to fill out a survey on the clock). I've submitted about three so far, enjoy!

Record of the Week

As we near halloween, allow me to recommend this C L A S S I C record of dementia and brilliance. An essential record!
Of course it's not entirely fair to lump this record in with "halloween" music, because it represents so much mental anguish, and also humor, plus it rocks! But it does fit nicely into the horror/halloween genre. Just get it out and play it!

Two things
I've been making mp3s out of all my CDs, and I wanted to share some love. I've also started work setting up version 2 of the blog. Hopefully that will be done sometime around the middle of November.
So, here's the entire Hoyt Clagwell CD in MP3 format. Something weird is going on with the server, so you can't just click on the title and play the song. You'll have to save it to your machine to play it.
The new domain will be www.post-literate.com. I'll have more details in a while.

In these troubling times...
Who else has had THIS song running through their heads, or perhaps on their stereos?
Anthrax
Woke up this morning desperation a.m.
What I've been saying won't say them again
My head's not empty, it's full with my brain
The thoughts I'm thinking
Like piss down a drain
And I feel like a beetle on its back
And there's no way for me to get up
Love'll get you like a case of anthrax
And that's something I don't want to catch
Ought to control what I do to my mind
Nothing in there but sunshades for the blind
Only yesterday I said to myself
The things I'm doing are not good
For my health
Love'll get you like a case of anthrax
And that's something I don't want to catch
Love'll get you like a case of anthrax
And that's something I don't want to catch
GANG OF FOUR
[wish I could add an mp3 of it]

Pink Triangles and Swastikas
Hitler was gay - and killed to hide it, book says
Of course this makes me think of a recording of "Der Führer's Face" by Spike Jones and His City Slickers. There's one section in the refrain where the chorus sing:
Ist ve not der Übermensch? And then all the music stops and somebody with a lisp says:
Yah! Ve ist der Übermensch!
Thuper-duper Übermensch!Yeah, it plays into horrible stereotypes, but it's always struck me funny in a Mel Brooks sort of way.

Winter biking!
Yesterday I bought studded tires for my bike. According to the manufacturer's website (Nokian of Finland), I overbought. I got the Nokian Extreme 296, which is a big offroad tire with 296 studs in it and cost $120 each. (For the record, that's double what I spent per tire for studs on my truck.) Nokian says that this is their tire for "X-treme cross-country and downhill use", but I said to myself, "Screw it. I want big fat studs." (Yes, that's a straight line begging for release, so go ahead.)
Anyway, it was pretty fun riding to work today, because I was actually moving faster than the cars and they were all sliding around and I wasn't. This is going to be a good winter.

My retardo fascination continues...
"Product Description Furby's friend Shelby is an interactive clam with the gift of gab! This little orange-and-yellow-striped gastropod has two little antennae and a tuft of fluffy hair. Like Furby, Shelby develops and responds to its surroundings the more time you spend with it. Shelby has a vocabulary of 180 words in Furbish, English, and its own special language--Shelbish. Shelby can communicate with Tiger Electronics's Furby, Furby Babies, Gizmo, and E.T. Interactive. Shelby plays hide-and-seek, a fortune-telling game, and knock-knock. If prompted with the correct secret codes, Shelby becomes Rude Shelby (with mumbling, belching, and the old Bronx cheer), Sick Shelby (with a lot of coughing, sneezing, and hiccuping), or Loving Shelby (with lots of kisses). With all the enhancements made to Shelby, this little clam has 70 percent more vocabulary and 50 percent more memory than Furby does, speaks three times the phrases, and contains more sensory input and double the number of built-in features that are unlocked through play."

So I watched a real crappy tv show last night when I shoulda been studying, called Wolf City or Wolf Lake, with Lou Diamond-Philips. I'm nt sure what it was even about, I wasn't really listeing to the words. I think one guy is a werewolf, and there's an indian who dispenses sage advice and medicine that make LDP hallucinate.
like i said, crap. but also very violent, and it made me feel old when I was shocked at the violence! one scene showed two dudes put a dude in a body bag, douse it with gas and set it on fire. another scene (the hallucination) showed some chick induce a seizue with some old timey machine
should i be shocked at this stuff, am i an old coot, or what's the deal?!

So I've ridden my bike to work almost every day for the last six weeks. It's my old mountain bike that I've rigged and jigged into what resembles an ugly touring bike (drop bars, bar-end shifters, rack), and I like it. And so I'm feeling proud of myself for riding and for maintaining my old beater. Then I see this. Man, I don't even know where I would start if I decided to build something like that.
