Hey, you guys in Texas...
Have you heard/seen this band?
I saw them play about a year ago in Berkley as the opening act for Jad Fair. They were a lot of fun, and I bought a CD from them. I'm listening to it right now, and I was wondering if any of you old farts in Austin still got out to see bands and had anything to say 'bout them.

To me it seems to make sense, but I don't have to make my living selling music.
(Savvy! Now that was a great band. Fort Worth in the house!)

A Nerdy Question For My Web Graphics Friends
So in the past month or so I've really have tried to learn as much graphic and web design as I can absorb, and have created a new home page that has Java button rollovers and an animated gif background...
I learned a lot doing it, but now there's 236k worth of data that has to be downloaded if someone wants to access the site (140k for the sound in the button rollovers, 96k in gifs).
I have crunched all the gifs and the sound files are 8kHz mono au files. There's no savings there. I can try shrinking the 56k background animated file to maybe a quarter of its size, but other than that I'm looking at bulky home page.
I know the size will be nothing much for high speed modems, but in the design world is there some rule of thumb but how big a site can be in order to be enjoyed by slower modems? Do most people in the US have 56k access?
I hate not being able to upload the new page, but if most people will give up on it before it can download then there isn't much of a point.

random thoughts
1] i been so into jazz recently that i forget how great OTHER music is that i like! the spinner:bluegrass is supergreat, plus there's always this: http://www.khyi.com/
2] speaking of jazz, thanks King n Craig for sending the jazzactuel box (and all them other ROCKs!), got it last night, im so excited i could
piss up a penny! lorn says she'll be droppin a check in the mail this week, plus a few extry goodies..!
3] ok the moon thing has me vexed. [not really but sorta] Do I believe the moon shot was a fake? Not really, but why should I believe we actually DID go to the moon? Both are absurd; and who says I HAVE TO believe FACTS? (isn't that FA[S]C[T]ISM?!) When the "evidence" is spurious, there' no telling what we can prove or disprove, or at least cause REASONABLE DOUBT. WAS the WTC attack a real "terrorist" attack, or just another CIA hit? There's plenty of "evidence" to "support" either claim, but neither would be conclusive. Is there wind on the moon? I dunno, never been there. Logic says no, but the filmclip says yes (and yes ive seen that clip elsewhere besides on that dude's website.) If I asked Jewel (the kitty who rules my house) she'd just yawn, stretch out her arm, and yowl at me to scratch her back. When we live in world where Eminem and Elton John make a record together, and it actually gets PLAYED, there's no telling what's real...
4] saw a great King of the Hill episode last night, with Willie Nelson in it, it ends at his picnic, and Anne Richards is playing tether-ball with one of Willie's roadies. Let us all take a knee, Hoyt-style, to King of the Hill.
5] One cup of coffee boys, one cup!

Ouch...
Hey guess what... I broke my collarbone. I went to an aikido retreat in Occidental Ca this weekend, and on Friday night, during the first class, I got my feet tangled in my partners hakama (big black japanese skirt) while taking a fall, and instead of going feet over head, I went shoulder first into the mat. Next thing I know I'm coming back to the camp wearing a figure eight brace and pumped full of vicodin. I have a friend who works for a medical imaging company who said he can scan my x-rays. I'll make sure to post a copy for you guys to see.
Mmmmmmm...vicodin.

A Good Thing About Saturday Night Live Reruns
Not so much the show, but the mugging and shennanagins during the credits. Today I saw RuPaul, Charles Barkely, and Kurt Cobain standing on stage smiling at each other like it was the most normal thing in the world. Then Krist Novacelic walked over and was comparing heights with RuPaul. I don't know. I just liked it.

Ok art scholars, help me out. I'm doing a presentation on bebop for my jazzhist. class next week, and I want to make a correlation between bebop and the later work of Jackson Pollock..
my question is, is this statement warranted? Does anyone know conclusively what music he listened to? I'm sure others have drawn the comparison between the music and his art- free expression but not CHAOS. I'm just wondering if it's real or just coincidental.
Thanks to all you who are smart!

Amen, Johnny!
To quote Johnny Cash: "Country music used to represent horses, railroads, land, judgement day, family, hard times, whiskey, courtship,
marriage, adultery, separatism, murder, war, prison, rambling, damnation, home, salvation, death, pride, humor, piety, rebellion,
patriotism, larceny, determination, tragedy, rowdiness, heartbreak, love, mother, and God."
Today, country consists of "artists" that sell-out in an effort to act and sound like pop groups. Currently, country music is only concerned
about fitting in and staying "popular."

(Along the way, I got sidetracked for 7 months in late 1999/early 2000, assuming the role of Creative Consultant at the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling branch of AOL/TimeWarner. Being part of the team that, each week, created 4 to 7 hours of live episodic television watched by 3-4 million households per show was a childhood dream come true, and perhaps the hardest work I’ve ever done. I learned a lot about life from that job, and it also took months to decompress from the experience. But I digress.)

Gene Simmons Takes On
If you're looking for the interview mp3, read this:
Send an email to gene@post-literate.com, and he'll send you a note back telling you where to find the file.
Sorry for the hassle, but we get a lot of requests for this file, and it would eat up our bandwidth, which is why we don't just post it. That and Gene Simmons specifically refused to let Fresh Air post the interview on their site.
thanks!

Two cultural notes
"That 80's Show" uses "Eighties" by Killing Joke as a them song. I'm so saddened by this realization that I can hardly speak. I hope the band is at least getting some money. Surely they could have found some bad, meaningfully eighties song to ruin. Anyone have any suggestions?
On a much happier note, I have discovered "Samurai Jack" on the Cartoon Network. It rules. I heart "Samurai Jack". If I could make a cartoon, it would be very similar to "Samurai Jack". Here's an interview with the creator.

PATTI SMITH'S LAND 1975-2002, the first compilation of her career, is set for March 19th release.
Patti Smith's, LAND 1975-2002, the long-anticipated first compilation of her career, is set for a March 19th in-store date. A double-CD package, LAND 1975-2002, presents one disc of single sides and album tracks that were chosen by her fans, and a second disc consistingentirely of material previously unreleased, including demo and alternate takes, live tracks, poetry, rarities and her recording of Prince's When Doves Cry. The collection will be graced by liner notes written by Susan Sontag, philosopher and educator, novelist and journalist, winner of last year's National Book Award for In America, as well as a 36 page booklet featuring previously unavailable photos, notes, original lyrics, artwork, and drawings from Patti Smiths archives. Additional unavailable material from Patti Smith's career will be available exclusively at her website, www.pattismithland.com, launching in March 2002.
The selections on disc one were finalized from more than 10,000 votes cast by fans during Pattis recent club and concert tours, as well as votes solicited over the Internet. The bulk of these songs originate on the 8 original albums that she has recorded for Arista:
Horses (1975), Radio Ethiopia (1976), Easter (1978), Wave (1979), Dream Of Life (1988), Gone Again (1996), Peace and Noise (1997), and Gung Ho (2000).
Fans can expect LAND 1975-2002's disc one to include Dancing Barefoot, Gloria, People Have the Power, Because The Night, Pissing In A River, Free Money, Summer Cannibals, Frederick, Glitter In Their Eyes, and more. The release of Patti Smiths, LAND 1975-2002 will coincide with a national tour with her band featuring Lenny Kaye, Oliver Ray, Tony Shanahan, and Jay Dee Daugherty.
Patti Smith - singer and songwriter, poet and rock shaman, mother and sister, activist and humanitarian, is a primal force of social conscience and has been one of the
cornerstones of Arista Records for its entire 26-year existence. Just as it is virtually impossible to separate Patti's mystique from the record company's identity, it is just as difficult to imagine the evolution of rock - especially the politically-charged factions of alternative rock - without her presence.
Of course I'm thrilled with this news of more unreleased stuff coming out- hopefully the Piss Factory/Hey Joe single will finally be released on cd- but of course i'm officially appalled at th enotion of BONUS TRACKS, which haunt my every living day.
That's also cool about her tour! Whatever, I'm a dork!

How Great Thou Aren't
It seems to me that our pal Triztan Tzara was very close to an understanding of the eternal tao, when he was speaking of dada:
[from http://dept.english.upenn.edu/~jenglish/English104/tzara.html]
"Dada is a state of mind. That is why it transforms itself according to races and events. Dada applies itself to everything, and yet
it is nothing, it is the point where the yes and the no and all the opposites meet, not solemnly in the castles of human
philosophies, but very simply at street corners, like dogs and grasshoppers...
...Perhaps you will understand me better when I tell you that Dada is a virgin microbe that penetrates with the insistence of air into all the spaces that reason has not been able to fill with words or conventions."
