titled "Tragic Prelude" (some sites call it "Tragic Prelude - John Brown"), a mural painted in 1944 by John Steuart Curry (but apparently not finished until 40 years after Curry died in '46). I'm not real up on my slavery/abolitionist history, but I've read that this painting is of radical aboltionist John Brown, who killed 20 pro-slavery-ites in the rush to claim Kansas territory as "free" or "slave".
That's all; interesting painting about interesting historical moment.
(and yes, it's on the first Kansas lp cover! sheesh!)
