Speaking of music...
Will someone please explain The Strokes to me? And while we're at it please explain Sloan.
Everyone I know is ga-ga about these two bands. I gave them a listen. I hear nothing interesting AT ALL.

Strong Recommendation:
I saw Raputina last night, I had never seen them before and since I found their cds under a bush recently I really wanted to check them out. They are two female vocalists/cellists, and a drummer, the cellos sometimes tricked out to sound weirder than any guitar you've heard, or quite beautiful traditional sound. This is not a gimmick band, this is their real personality and frankly I thought they were great. Melora Creager, the songwriter and one constant in a somewhat rotating lineup over their three or so lps- this lineup one totally clicks I think- is incredibly inventive and has a fantastic voice. The songs are weird, quirky, funny, haunting, and plenty of hooks. Plus some surprising covers. I really recommend y'all go see them; a totally unique show. They are playing austin/stubbs tonight, so yall austiners go! Plus there were scores of beautiful goth children there...
Also, the opening band The Hazard County Girls rocked, a cute teenage dark punk threesome, who gave props to Flannery O'Conner and her novel Wiseblood from the stage, possibly one of the very few literary mentions I've ever heard from a punk band! (Jello's spoken word sets don't count!)

Hankey Code
I recall having checked this 'log several times, because I thought we had at one time discussed the Hankey Codes, but until now, I guess we haven't.
So once and for all, here are a few links to the Hankey Code, two chosen specifically [1 2], plus a page to a google search for more, depending how interested you are in comparing these.
Happy hunting!

Compassionate Conservative...
We urgently need your help.
President Bush endorsed the "Marriage Protection Week," Oct. 12-18, that was announced last week by the Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America, Focus on the Family and representatives from over 20 other ultra-conservative, anti-gay organizations. One of the coalition's goals is to build support for a Constitutional amendment to permanently deny civil marriage to same-sex couples.
Please join the Human Rights Campaign in denouncing President Bush's endorsement of this politically motivated, mean-spirited attack on gay families.
Click here to send a message to President Bush!
Please act right now. And after you've sent your e-mail, call the White House switchboard at (202) 456-1414. Ask President Bush to reconsider his endorsement of "Marriage Protection Week". Tell him that this is a false and misleading campaign to 'protect' families by fostering discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans. Ask him to oppose any attempts to build discrimination into the U.S. Constitution.
Thank you for your support of the Human Rights Campaign and thank you for taking action.
Sincerely,
Seth Kilbourn
National Field Director
P.S. It is essential that that we generate as many calls and e-mails as possible into the White House. We need you, your family and friends to take action right away.
The "Coalition to Protect Marriage" is composed of: American Association of Christian Schools, American Cause, American Family Association, American Values, Bott Broadcasting, Christian Coalition, Citizens for Community Values, Concerned Women for American, Eagle Forum, Faith2Action, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, Free Congress Foundation, Gideon Christian Fellowship Church, Home School Legal Defense Association, INSP TV Network, National Religious Broadcasters, Prison Fellowship, Prison Fellowship/Wilberforce Forum, Religious Freedom Coalition, Southern Baptist Convention, Thomas Road Baptist Church, and World Magazine.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Visit the web address below to tell your friends to urge President Bush not to support discrimination!

If you are a current member of HRC, thank you. To help HRC fund the Action Center and support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality, please join HRC or renew your membership today. Visit our membership page at http://www.hrc.org/joinus.
Thank you for taking action and for supporting HRC.
