Singer-songwriter Ray Davies is recovering from a gunshot wound suffered Sunday night in New Orleans. Davies, frontman of the classic rock group the Kinks, was chasing two thieves who snatched a purse from a woman he was walking with in the French Quarter.

According to police, the 59-year-old Davies and the woman were walking along the Quarter's Burgundy Street around 8:30 p.m. when the theft and shooting occurred.

Davies was not seriously wounded. Police say he was treated at a hospital and released. One suspect was captured within hours of the shooting and another is being sought. With the Kinks, Davies has recorded such hits as "Lola," "You Really Got Me" and "Come Dancing." Davies and legendary rocker Eric Clapton were made Commanders of the Order of the British Empire just last week by Queen Elizabeth II in London
