I remember the moment that I realized Santa wasn't real. I was either 5 and woke up on Christmas Eve. I heard a noise downstairs, so I tiptoed down to where I could see into the living room and saw my parents wrapping some last minute presents.

I don't recall being terribly disappointed, but it was something of an "a-ha" moment. I imagined it was something that I had over my brother and perhaps even my sister.

It was the following year (when I was 6) that I announced very loudly in church choir practice that I didn't think God was real. "At least not the way they talk about him," was my conditional.
