Enough, Already!!!!!
So, now Waterloo Brewing Company is going belly up to become lofts.
Maybe I'm a little extra pissed off because Billy Forrester is a friend of mine and I know how much of his soul is in that bar, maybe it's that I can damn near throw a rock at the empty carcass of a 6 story abandoned building that was never completed (that is a block away from W-loo), maybe it's seeing the lofts next door not selling as the tech boom dies its last death, but I'm a little more than fed up with "smart growth" and "downtown revitalization". When the lofts don't sell and become abandoned eyesores, the owners can take a tidy tax loss, while the rest of us get to live with "yuppie ghetto" syndrome. Not to mention, current business owners can no longer afford to do business downtown, and must succumb to the "Starbucks syndrome" and flee for cheaper pastures. Gone forever will be any soul, character, or point in going downtown. Enough is enough, al-fucking-ready!!!

Record of the Week
This week's entry is more about the sometimes sublime experience of listening to the car radio while driving around. Saturday I was driving alone through the suburban vista of Mesquite (in my heart I BELIEVE in the suburbs!) and heard on the radio the new single by TOOL. (It's called "schism" I know because I looked it up on their website https://www.toolband.com/)
Ok first of all let me say this about Tool. I previously hadn't given much thought to them; I figured that as a corporate entity they were aptly named. Their music, though not always that good in my opinion, does at least stand out from most of the dross (five dollars please) that I hear on rock radio. So much of that crap is moronic nihilism, and even that is encountered through layer upon layer of falsity; copying as it does the nihilistic crap that came out LAST year, brought and sold to you at great expense by the corporate powers of the music industry, and mtv, and rolling stone, ad naseum. (Homer: "Nothing good ends in -eum!") But I do think that TOOL are maybe more inventive, musically and lyrically, than the professional angry teenagers that surround them in the mainstream. (Their videos are usually great, twisted, surrealistic animations, even (especially) with the sound off. I've seen several in bars just that way!)
So anyway, I'm driving around on Saturday looking at the suburbs, listening to the radio, and this tool song comes on. I had heard it maybe once before, and liked it; there's a part towards the end that sounds like Pink Floyd swallowed Devo, and Devo are trying to get back out through PF's pores. As I'm passing baptist church after baptist church, high school football stadiums, bingo parlors, auto parts stores, the song goes: "I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them fall apart" and those weird pink devo sounds, I guess I had an epiphanous listening experience.
So now I like that song, but in a way I don't need to hear it again. But after that particular listening, it's definitely my record of the week!

poor katie, poor me
So that's old news, but the sad part is that I actually got Katie to sit down and watch Jackass for the very first time last week, instead of just walking through the room rolling her eyes while I lay gasping for air on the floor, laughing myself into a stupor.
But she didn't just watch it. She got into it. She laughed.
Apparently she hadn't heard the cancellation news, and just last night she asked, "So when is Jackass on again?" She was so sad when I told her.

ok. but really.
so more of my ongoing mortality ruminations lead me to this:
what did i really really want to be when i grew up? in fact, what do i want to do now? i have a jumble of priorities; from being a good dad and contributing to peace and wholesomeness in my home, for instance, to being really successful in a job or career, both in terms of the work i produce and the money i bring home.
but i still don't know exactly where the bull's eye is among these and a welter of other sometimes contradictory desires, drives, aspirations, hopes, dreams, needs, etc. and i don't see a clear route from where i am that i can take to get really anywhere near some of the priorities... the huge money part, for example. so.
what did you want to be when you grew up? what did you want, in 1982, to be when you grew up? what did you want to be in 1992 when you grew up? What do you want to be NOW when you grow up?
do you think you'll get there?

sigh
Well that didn't even last a whole day! Bubba is an incredibly sweet dog and very, very loveable. But Auggie hated him. Auggie apparently saw him as a threat, and even after a few hours (and one fracas started by Auggie where Bubba actually had all of Auggie's head in his mouth and drew a little blood over his eye), when Bubba had recognized that Auggie was not going to back down and stopped challenging him, Auggie wouldn't let it go. Every 15 minutes or so, he'd launch himself at Bubba barking his head off and trying to herd him around, biting his ankles and trying to get at his neck.
Props to Auggie for refusing to bow to a dog that outweighs him by about 60 pounds and stands double his height, but it's a bummer because Bubba is a damn fine dog. Oh, well. Maybe we'll find a nice, submissive bitch.

Yet Another Music List
So, you're bored with all the "current" music you're listening to, and you decide to dig out some old relics you haven't listened to in at least a few years and see what happens. What do you uncover (and enjoy wholeheartedly)? For me, a couple have been:
Talking Heads "Remain in Light" and "Fear of Music"
Minutemen "Double Nickles on The Dime" (sort of counts, as I have been listening to the Minutemen, just not that one)
Deep Purple "Machine Head" (forgot how damn good that record is)
Public Enemy "Yo, Bum Rush The Show"
George Jones "Don't Stop The Music"

Something new every day ...
For my birthday, Katie and I went to dinner at a nice brewpub then went to Barnes & Noble to do some browsing and maybe some buying. I was tempted to get the recent Woody Guthrie biography, but I've got a pile of half-read books on my nightstand already, so I decided to fill two holes in my music collection.
I got Remain In Light and Back to Basics (Billy Bragg, not Olivia Newton John).
It turns out that probably my favorite song from Remain in Light, Listening Wind, isn't a lovely little song about how life in the third world is more connected to nature. It's a song about a guy in a third world country who decides that he doesn't like the colonization that he sees happening around him and that he doesn't like Americans, so he builds bombs to blow them up. I like that song even more now.
Also recommended: Spirit of the Century by The Blind Boys of Alabama. Incredible, incredible gospel group. The album linked above happens to be on Realworld, but they have an extensive catalog.

And a big Happy Birthday to the Panama Canal!
From the official Panama Canal web site (Macromedia Flash required):
"Plans were made for a grand celebration to appropriately mark the official opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. A fleet of international warships was to assemble off Hampton Roads on New Year’s Day 1915, then sail to San Francisco through the Panama Canal, arriving in time for the opening of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, a world's-fair type celebration. But no such grand opening occurred. Although the Panama Pacific Exposition went on as planned, World War I forced cancellation of planned festivities at the Canal. The grand opening was a modest affair with the Canal cement boat Ancon, piloted by Captain John A. Constantine, the Canal's first pilot, making the first official transit. There were no international dignitaries in attendance. Observing the transit from shore, Goethals followed its progress by railroad."

your breathless wait is over, it's time for the Record of the Week:
Ornette Coleman: Dancing in Your Head
If you told me that this was Ornette Coleman with the guitarist from James Brown's band and the drummer from Captain Beefheart's band, I'd probably have believed it. It's not of course but that gives you some idea of the sound on this record. A funky, fun, rocking record! The two tracks with the Master Musicians of Joujouka are also brilliant. Another music list
I'm toying with the idea of performing live again. There are a few open mikes up here every week, and I thought I might just sit in on one of them. It'll give me something to do besides freeze my nads this winter. I'd like to start with set of about ten songs, just me playing an accoustic.
But I need some help. The way I listen to music is to listen to one CD over and over until I'm sick of it, which means that at any given time, the list of songs I'd like to cover sounds more like a tribute set than anything else.
So what five or ten songs would actually get you to sit through an open mike performance? (This assumes that somebody has gotten you to attend an open mike performance in the first place.)

Let's list! Records to clear a room:
These would be records that YOU personally like, can enjoy listening to, but would most likely clear a room of unwanted party-stayers, long-talkers, glommers, etc, THAT WON'T GET OUT!
1] any YOKO ONO, especially the 30 minute "Cambridge 1969" which is her screaming over John's feedback. Awesome.
2] MAGMA: Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh- this cd has the longest track repeated at the end, and is punctuated by a piercing electronic hum somewhere in the middle that makes it sound like your stereo is about to give birth to a retarted toaster!
3] LOU REED: Metal Machine Music- I don't have the new cd reissue of this yet, but the vinyl has a locked groove on side four. When (if) it ever reaches that point, you and your party-leeches will be locked in an endurance test for who lunges to the turntable first!
What else?!

the darker side
riding my bike home from dinner last night, it was dark, probably about 9, i was cresting a little hill of the southbound frontage road of 35 where i was preparing to turn left on the 51st overpass. as i crested the hill-let, sweetly hitting a broad green light with no cars behind me, i neglected to fully appreciate the lake of coolant/oil or whatever the hell it was that was all over the leftmost lane... my lane.
(what was i doing on the IH35 frontage road, you may well ask? well, it was kindly not really my plan, but one thing and another, that's where i ended up -- with only about a block and a half total -- and what the hell.)
by the time i realized that i was on king slick, it was too late. i tried to smoothly roll through it, but lost control and was flipped off my bike. primarily onto my right knee, though a little on my hands and chest and chin, too. the knee took the brunt of it, though, so my pretty face is now unmarked by the event. the whole thing actually worked out okay, this AM i find myself reminded of it only with a couple of big strawberries on my knee, really. my right pedal is a little ground down on the end, but the bike looks all right. my hands didn't get burned at all, thank goodness.
but as i flew so briefly through the air, i thought, 'holy shit, i'm glad i'm not being followed by several hundred pounds of hot motorcycle grinding itself up expensively behind me. after getting up and making sure i was still basically operational... i was amazed that the cars stopped right there where i biffed didn't even roll down a window to ask if i was okay. oh well. in the event, i WAS okay, so everything worked out.
not really that dramatic of a story after all. but it was pretty ... erm ... exciting ... at the time.

crazy
i bought the new firemans texas cruzer race yesterday. after standing in the store for almost an hour weighing options (should i go with my initial impulse and get the clearcoat steel, my second mania and get the badass stealth matte black, or jeez look at that yellow, just about the same color as my ol' schwinn stingray!), i finally settled down and got the clearcoat. one of the - i think - few hundred 26" BMX bikes being made anywhere in the world this year. and its mine all mine.
the welds are beautiful, not like the unseemly scars some welds can be. these are gorgeous. the steel fairly glows under the sun. i upgraded to the profile crankset, and got the rest stock. so besides being in love with it aesthetically... my ride to work today literally felt a third shorter. maybe better. the bike rides like nothing i've ever experienced. tight and clean and beautiful and easy and fast.
and built right here in austin, texas. they'll deliver anywhere, though... david. i just can't tell you how awesome this bike is. i looked at - and test rode - a bunch of $1K mtn. bikes, and none can TOUCH this bike. its smoother over rough pavement, its faster uphill, it jumps easier. i just can't express.
the kona cruiser brought me pure joy. this is ecstasy.
