Dr. K is in the house!

Yesterday, Henry Kissinger was on campus to give the keynote address in a forum entitled "Ethical and Moral Dimensions of America's War on Terrorism." Only 25 people, including only 2 SMU students, protested, handing out fliers {with facts regarding his role in escalating Vietnam and Cambodia, in East Timor and in Chile; these fliers also had the following links: www.kissinger.20m.com and https://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Kissinger/HKissinger.html}

A small number perhaps, but the Daily Campus also ran this Letter to the Editor from a faculty: https://www.smudailycampus.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2002/03/27/3ca2a620da42f?in_archive=1

[Incidentally, it was only announced Monday that HK would be here, I think that was a deliberate tactic to stifle on-campus protests, for which any group would be required to get a permit 72 hours in advance.. Though it's doubtful that the turnout would have been much bigger otherwise.]

Anyway, I got to thinking, wouldn't it be fun to actively campaign to have Kissinger's Nobel Peace Prize rescinded? Impossible? Of course. But it could direct international attention to his war crimes, and it would be funny! Imagine getting signatures on petitions from OTHER winner of the NPP, like Tutu..

So, who's with me? It's not like you're doing anything right?

Google Yanks Anti-Scientology Sites

Besides the ramifications of being able to sue Google to get anything you don't like removed off their engine, I'm blown away by the "just the facts, m'am" closing paragraph:

"Hubbard's secret scriptures teach that 75 million years ago, an evil galactic overlord named Xenu solved the galaxy's overpopulation problem by freezing excess people and transporting the bodies to Teegeeack, now called Earth. After the hapless travelers were defrosted, they were chained to volcanoes that were blown up by hydrogen bombs -- and their disembodied spirits continue to haunt mankind today."

New Game for Fridays

Song Bomb! (or Song Meme, or Meme Bomb Song, etc etc)

Every friday we all post the "hook" to a song that we think will stay in the heads the longest, and/or is most irritating, etc. [I guess it could even be a commercial jingle too]

The "winner" would be the one whose song... well, we'd ALL be winners!

The Offenders, continued...

Saturday night the Offenders played at SXSW. For those wanting a faithful circa-'83 peformance, the Offenders delivered since JJ was thrown in jail the night before and couldn't make bail for the show. They carried on anyway, with another guy singing JJ's parts.

I seem to recall this happened a fair amount "back in the day", so I was kind of impressed by their attention to detail.

I saw a lot of great stuff this year at SXSW, by the way.

My favorite bands:

High on Fire - kind of like a stoned Motorhead with a ton of distortion. Inspiring.

Acid Mothers Temple - Jim Coffey would call this "acid rock". From Japan

Major Stars - see "Acid Mothers Temple". From Boston.

Kinski - see "Major Stars". From Seattle.

Easy Action - the singer from Laughing Hyenas, bass player from the Necros, punk and blusey and just great.

Cutthroats 9 - the singer and guitar player from Unsane, sounding like Unsane.

Polyphonic Spree - 4th time I've seen them. 25 piece choir and orchestra from Dallas doing kindergarden psychedelia a la Flaming Lips.

Urban Legend-eering

Ok we all love urban legends- you know, spiders in the cactus, bloody hook on the door handle, "terrorist" attack on the world trade center, etc, and I'm sure there are several great websites dedicated to this study, debunking of same.

Here's one such site, the Urban Legend Research Center; basically one dude with a sharp looking site and a sense of humor. His "caseworker/researcher" style is funny I think.

ANYWAY, allow me to direct your attentions to this page, https://www.ulrc.com.au/html/report.asp?CaseFile=ULRR0088&Page=1&View=Request , one of the many ULs based on the Sept 11 tragedy. In the FAA response to his queries, that agency says "There are many charities and volunteer organizations around the country which would appreciate donated time and effort. This would be a more productive enterprise than creating hoaxes."

I certainly agree, but I also am left to wonder about the nagging feeling that creating hoaxes IS an important part of a balanced cultural/social diet. But I'm at a loss to articulate why..!

Any takers?

How to keep people from fucking with your blog

You can disable everything but links, bold, and italics, or you can disable all HTML in the comments. Of course, if you just have a little group blog for your friends to use, you can hope that they wouldn't do anything like bomb the comments section, but then you never know, do you?

Of course, if it's really important to you, you can pretty easily go in and close an entry that somebody has rendered unusable by inserting a big wad of JavaScript.

Not that I would do that or anything.

today's obsession

this painting: https://tigtail.org/M_View/TVM/B/NAmerican/a.%20pre%20WW%20II/curry/M/curry_the_tragic_prelude_john_brown.1942.jpg

titled "Tragic Prelude" (some sites call it "Tragic Prelude - John Brown"), a mural painted in 1944 by John Steuart Curry (but apparently not finished until 40 years after Curry died in '46). I'm not real up on my slavery/abolitionist history, but I've read that this painting is of radical aboltionist John Brown, who killed 20 pro-slavery-ites in the rush to claim Kansas territory as "free" or "slave".

That's all; interesting painting about interesting historical moment.

(and yes, it's on the first Kansas lp cover! sheesh!)

country online revisited

yes spinner.com:classic country is great, but allow me to pitch www.khyi.com again...

khyi plays stuff you'd never hear on "classic" or "new hot" country stations, but a good mix of everything; singer/songwriter type stuff, outlaw country, rockabilly, plus classic, a few clunkers here and there. plus they have a "local" sound that ive grown to like. (early this morning they played some john hiatt song, some guy called in to complain- he thought it waw kenny rogers! HAAAR har har har har har! [knee slap!])

anyway their website uses the dreaded word AMERICANA which i hate; to me that's just a word some staffwriter at Billboard made up, and the people who still use it are afraid to say they like COUNTRY or FOLK music, and consequently some good stuff gets hung with that tag. (but it seems like only a few years ago that we all still used the term BLACK records, so...) Oh well, that gives yall an idee what they're like, yall should tune in.

in closing, if any of yall daves or kings wanna move back to ther metryplex, im thinkin we oughta start a country band called The DFWers! [pronounced DEE EFF DUB'YERS, ok!]

So, I'm taking Mandarin1A this semester,

and we are given the assignment of writing dialogues with a partner. My partner and I introduce ourselves to one another, and exchange phone numbers and e.mail addresses. He's this real quite kid who looks like he is just happy to have survived high school. Extremely quite.

Later that night, after working on my part of the dialogue, I found the peice of paper with his e.mail address on it, and for the first time I realized how brilliant this kid is. His address is:

Good god, that's beautiful; he told me he's had it for years. I'm beginning to have faith in this next generation. (ps. don't bug him with mail, I don't think he would appreciate me blabbing his address to a bunch of 30-somethings)

More on the Electronic Distribution of Intellectual Property

All the talk about ripping MP3s and how it was taking money right out of the mouths of the artists who created the music got me to thinking...

Has anyone here ever stolen a font? i know i have; i'm guessing most of us have. Has anyone here ever offered anyone a font? Even a font that they had paid for? I have. Either of these instances is theft. Fonts are created by artists (typographers) and licenced by foundries.

There was a time when the creation of a workable typeface was an incredibly expensive process. There was design of the actual face involved, then molds were created, the forms were cast, the individual blocks were sanded, polished, oiled and purchased for a very expensive price. Presses prided themselves on the amount of typestyles they could offer a customer.

'Ye Olde Type House--Home of 6 type styles!'

With the birth of digital typography that all went to pot. All of a sudden ANYone could design a font, ANYone could copy and distribute a font, and worst of all ANYone could manipulate, distort, mangle and crucify hundreds of years of craftsmanship.

Your Aunt Betty can use Trajan, a face commisioned 2000 years ago to grace the tomb of Augustus, to write invitiations to her poodle Dupree's birthday party. She can even shape the text to look like Dupree! Augustus rolls over.

The carefully created work of master typographers was being distributed in giant software collections under wonderful names like Hermetica, New Cavalry Schoolbook, and Garamonderful. Words like kerning, leading, m-dash and descender were as misused and misunderstood as a soccer mom at a bathhouse.

Foundries responded by going digital, easing up on prices and relaxing on licenses. I'm not sure how succesful it is. I'll be more than happy to pay $39.99 for a face if I can; but a lot of people can't and won't.

True; we're talking about a vertical market here. Most people are happy with the 15 fonts that come wth XP. But the electronic distribution of intellectual property in ANY form is theft, right?
