ok hopefully since all yall are tech-knowledgers you can help a brother out with some advice on purchasing a pda.

have i talked about this before? if so i wasnt really that serious about it, but i am getting seriouser now. I want to buy a cheap/used pda that would be sync-able with PC(sorry Mac fans). I saw something in office depot recently that intrigued me; a "book" styled dealie where the pda stays in the left side, and the keyboard is on the right side. What are those called?, cuz i cant find them on any site. (I've looked at palm & handspring sites, also half.com and something called cnet.) I think this "book" style is more for me than the fold out keyboard.

i dont much care about any of the modules you can get to turn your pda into a camera, phone, jacuzzi etc, although if there was some such thing that could turn it into a digital RECORDING device, like for audio saples, i'd dig that! I guess email would be cool too; is that a standard feature on these things?

thanks for yalls help, until then i'll keep chiseling my notes and messages into a granite slate.

Check out some of the editor's picks on cnet.com, plus the "what to look for in a handheld" piece here: Hardware Reviews - CNET.com

ttk, about price, i dont know, i keep seeing some pdas on half.com for $49, that sounds about right! as far as the "book" i figured id be buying that new, but not if they're a pain to use. this may sound dumb but that "book" element was the thing that pushed me into wanting a pda; if it doesnt work well i may not get one at all.

king i hadnt really read the reviews yet, just kinda glanced around at prices.

Phil, do you want to use the PDA as a calendar/address book or do you want to use it more like a laptop (write/check email, take notes, etc.)?

Posted by: mccreath at April 22, 2002 11:36 AM

more like a laptop, but the addressbookncalender'd be nice to, so i can keep up with my many homewrok aggingments and tests. this month ive been carying around a couple of pages of a calender.

sure two pages is cheaper, smaller, lighter, thinnier, easier. BUT I WANT A PDA!

the treo is a step in the right direction, but they're gsm, which is a pain for a lot of areas in the country. i've also heard a lot of people grumbling that they just aren't as hot as they should be.

treo notes: among the big complaints (in addition to gsm only) is the expense of the online minutes (like 15 cents a minute plus) and the battery life supposedly totally blows. also the software is buggy and crash prone.

also, the online connection is slow slow slow, doesn't handle javascript, frames, etc
