Texas Punk Junk

posted by Kong on April 15, 2002

Friday Craig Stewart mastered a Stick Men with Ray Guns cd (their first album ever) and Craig's putting it out. Clark (the guitar player) flew from Florida to be there for it. Clark is looking good, is a happy man. His wife is some sort of senior editor at the National Enquirer (I met her too).

Anyway over the course of the weekend I was told about Erin from Superman's Girlfriend's site Texas Punk Junk. It's basically her scrap book of old photos from that time. I honestly don't know most of the people, but it's still kind of fun to leaf through for looking at some Dallas punks in the late 70s (and you do run across the very odd photo of Alan Robinson every now and then).

Also this weekend I went to Motorhead and Merle Haggard. Hoyt, Tom - where were you?

Part 1: I've run across this site before a time or two, most excellent. Seing the Loco Gringos portion instantly turns me into a kid again, them boys was nuts.

Part 2: I was on call all fucking weekend vainly trying to fix a nationwide register problem, inventory problems, the list goes on. I would have rather licked a construction site port a potty clean than live the weekend I had. I loathe my job and the people who call in with a vile hatred unknown to me until now.

I heard great things about Motorhead, good to hear ol' Merle's still going strong as well.

Motorhead was indeed great. The first 20 minutes were kind of rough though since they were battling feedback problems, but once it was fixed (they left the stage to have the sound crew fix it once and for all), they rocked very hard.

I'm embarrased to say that it was the first time I've seen them. But I get a feeling this show was about the same as seeing them 10 or 20 years ago. Intense and really loud. They did a surprisingly weak version of "God Save the Queen", but then followed with a tribute to the Joey Ramone that was basically a reworked version of "Rockaway Beach" that was just great.

The crowd loved it and I saw a lot of new Motorhead t-shirts at Emo's the next night.

Merle also delivered the goods. Basically the same set and crew as when he played Stubb's about a year ago, but they had Johnny Gimble on fiddle this go round. He played all the hits and the crowd was very much into it.

It was a good weekend for me, that's for sure. God damn Whole Foods! I'm sorry, DJ.

Mėrlėhead!!! I love it! I'm just picturing Lemmy singing "Momma Tried", and a happy, sick smile is crossing my face...

So, when the hell are you, Tom, and me going out for a beer or BBQ, King?

We got to go out for these things Mr. J. Out of curiosity, do you or Tom like baseball? Craig and I are part of a pool that has season tickets to the Round Rock Express. Occasionally I have a spare ticket when Craig can't go, but I know very few people who actually admit to liking baseball. If this sounds like something you'd want to go to sometime, let me know, and I'll give you a call when I have a spare.

Dead Kennedys (with Brandon Cruz from the Courtship of Eddie's Father playing the role of Jello Biafra) is tonight. I'm going, in part to see how weird it is.
