WANTLIST REVISITED

Here it is again, https://people.smu.edu/pflowers/wantlist.html

I wanted to try to break it into two pages, books & records/cds, but Microsoft Frontpage is such a godawful terrible program that I am not able to. Why use it? Because we're pretty much forced to here.

Anyway, I AGAIN extend the invitation for any of yall to send me yours, I am ALWAYS shopping the bins... I could have passed over your wants a hundred times by now!

The Challenge

So, the CIO of the FoodHole is making us go through this management survey, followed by several meetings, followed by more meetings.

I've hit the snap point; I can't with any bit of soul I have left do this with any sense af accuracy or attentiveness, and I refuse to add to the "static picture of a dynamic process will solve all" rationale. My goal then, is to have them ask me to step down because of my answers and work ethic. Wish me luck, fellers! If all goes well, I'll have 2 months of paid time to land a new job (and who the hell knows, maybe finally convince my wife that we need to move the hell out of Austin).

Acupuncture

Dave L, Tom, et al, I'm interested in acupuncture as the next step in relieving some nasty hip and knee pain that I've been having (since I think I was born at this point).

I'm completely clueless about it; what advice can you offer, what do you think of it, if I go through with it, will King finally give Phil a hug, etc.? Much for the thanking of you for the picking of your brains very much!

an interesting quote from Mork:

"These huge bears just watch you, like, 'I can either eat you or take you home, it's your call.' They wander through town like, 'It doesn't matter what I do, this is Alaska and I'm endangered. Shoot me and you go to jail.' And they have a thing called Hydereiser they're drinking in the bars, which is like 190 proof — you wake up nude in a field with a raccoon going, 'You have to leave now.' It's hardcore alcohol."

— Robin Williams, on shooting Christopher Nolan's Insomnia in Hyder, Alaska.

Freezie McKilt: I'm really only interested in this Hydereiser; do you know of it? Have you become intoxicated upon it? Ship me some tootsweet, sweetie!

i'm gainfully reemployed as of next monday. i actually like the people. tiny office... about 7 people. big clients. doing well enough to be hiring - profitable even thru the last 12 months. the actual work sounds like fun. about the same pay i was getting at idc.

all in all, it is really a fantastic gig.

i'm going to REALLY miss all the extra time i've been spending with koop, though.

Snowy Owl

This little guy showed up in Anchorage last week, which is pretty unusual for a snowy owl. Odder still is that he somehow spotted this little mound to sit on about 300 yards out in the tidal mud flats of Cook Inlet. (Sorry for the crappy quality of the picture. It was taken through a stranger's birding scope with my Olympus D-510, with the digital zoom cranked all the way out to 9x.)

Elvis

I went to see Elvis Costello last night. It was in Berkeley, and as soon as I got off the Bart I was accosted by anti-war protestors. I seriously think they're planted there by the tourist bureau. Elvis put on a great show. Played a bunch of stuff from the new album, which rocks, and a bunch of stuff from Imperial Bedroom, including Little Fool, which he never plays live.

He ended with an heart-wrenching rendition of I Want You (which he dedicated to Phil).

On my way back someone through an egg out of an SUV, but it whizzed by my head and hit the chick in front of me in the back destroying her Dolce and Gabana overcoat. Sad, really.

Buy the new album. It's good.

Let's Talk About Bliss..

.Blood!

I still dig out those Pain Teens cds and quite enjoy them; my favorites are StimFest and Beast of Dreams, the cover of which warms my heart!

I always liked Bliss- granted I didn't deal with her near a fraction as much as you did King and also Dave- so I guess I got to appreciate her music and lyrics pretty much unfettered by any attitude y'all endured. I genuinely think that she was/ is a talented person.

The allmusic link reveals her work with other groups, like Gira's Angels of Light, which I didn't know. I did once hear a record she did with the otherwise heavy metal band Exit 13; but this record was all '20s jazz tunes about pot! It was pretty good actually. https://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Br6he4j870wa4

Ok but just today, in a search for "Bliss Blood" in yahoo, I found this link for her new band the Moonlighters https://www.misanthrope.com/moonlighters/ They're all hawaiin guitar and ukelelies, check out the 2 mp3s, pretty great!

New Topic:

Attention: technophiles, techies, tech geeks, technoids:

what I have in my head that I want to buy is this: a hand~held cd burner with a microphone port for recording an outside sound source. Ideally this would be for those 3" cds, and I could burn directly to those tiny cds with either a seperate mic or a point-and-record feature. Essentially a DAT handheld but rather a DACD, I don't want to use tape, I want to use cds! Finally, this item would be compatible with PC- rather than Mac, sorry mac lovers. DOES SUCH AN ITEM EXIST? And if so, is it affordable?

the nearest thing i have found so far is the Imation RipnGo, seen here: (sorry for the long link!) https://www01.bhphotovideo.com/default.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=ProductActivatorAproductlist_html_246209_IMRGJ_REG_CatID=4250_SID=EE05CA6D840___call=Incls#goto_Incls but near as I can tell it doesn't have an audio-in port or any kind of outside-source recording features, unless I'm reading the spec's wrong, which is entirely possible. I don't know how to read specs!

Do any of yall have any idears or suggestions? Thanks! :)

Observations Of A Lubbock Trip

So, I spent the weekend in the ever so beautiful city of Lubbock, Texas for my sister's wedding, and have a few observations about the region.

1) John Cougar Mellencamp: Apparently, JCM is a revered God once one crosses over the Eden TX city limits. Every city from there to Lubbock had a JCM song playing. No, EVERY CITY. I expected a slew of typically bad 70's Bachman Turner Overdrive-esque tunes on the radio, but ol' John stood above all in bad redundancy. Made for a fun song guessing game once Emily's Gameboy ran out of juice, though.

2) Golf Courses: Every 1000 populated ditchwater shithole town from Eden to Lubbock has a friggin' golf course at the edge of the city limits. This promted Emily and I to wonder, do they think that they'll get a PGA tour to blow through and put them on the map, or are there "golf dads" that are "gonna get their boys on the circuit!!!"? I guess high school football has become passe. Or is it that John Cougar Mellencamp is an avid golf fan?

3) Thug teens: What city would be complete without the gathering of Ford Bronco and Camaro driving mullet heads at the Town and Country quicky mart to stare down the ne'er do wells that pass through to buy gas and cold Cokes? They put us in our place; we will NEVER drive through their towns again without either sporting a mullet, cranking John Cougar Mellencamp tunes from the car while pumping gas, or both.

4) Dust Devils: There's nothing like the excitement of seeing the ground next to your car swell up into a turbulent ball of hell dust and sweep across the road in front of you (especially when you're doing 95 mph). Gives one's car a delightful brown grit hue as well. Just makes one wonder, ain't that America?

Other than that (and by far the most vile, disgusting motel stay I've ever had), the trip was uneventful. My sister is now Mrs. Roger Terry, the family is doing well, and when we got back, the dogs were happy to see us. All in all, a fairly decent weekend.

Stone Pimple Toilets

This weekend I watched a "Headbanger's Ball" retrospective on MTV, and there was this one scene with Ricky Rachtman interviewing Gibby and Paul.

As they're winding it up, Rachtman has to throw to a Stone Temple Pilot's video and says something along the lines of "Coming up, Stone Temple Pilots ... " at which point Gibby interrupts him and says, "Hey, who does that band remind you of?" Rachtman responds, "Who don't they remind me of?" All three have a good chuckle, and they go to the video.

Apparently Scott Weiland got his nose way out of joint and was telling MTV that STP were going to pull out of some big concerts that MTV was sponsoring and generally not taking the joke very well. Rachtman eventually had to apologize (I think on the air), and then everything was okay.

So, King, do you remember this? I remember you telling me a story about playing some show with STP right when they were getting really popular and Weiland overheard Gibby refer to them as the "Stone Pimple Toilets" and got all upset because the Buttholes were idols of his and now his feelings were all hurt. Did these two things happen around the same time?
