Last Year's...

mania

They (Burger King) don't seem to have a similar website "launched" yet, but my boss & I will be heading out tomorrow with dollars in hand, THIS IS MY VOW TO YOU ALL.

Posted by Lang Squal at 09:53 AM | Comments (3)

Huh? WHAAT?!

I won't be able to hear y'all too well this morning. I went to see And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, and Queens of the Stone Age last night. Both bands were great, both were LOUD, and QOTSA were SUPER LOUD. So my ears are ranging.

What?

Meet You Under Big Tex!

We always go to the Fair on the first night, have some corn dawgs, ride some rides, see the new cars in the car show, etc. Last year was real nice cuz we saw Lucinda Williams and she was great! This year the big act is LEE GREENWOOD, and no matter where in the fairgrounds we are, I know we're gonna hear that f*ck*ng awful song which i won't even mention!

Site Additions

So I rearranged the front page a little tonight. “Recent Comments” is now on the left, and I added two other things over there as well.

The black box has links to little things that I’ll write about how to make web pages work. My family started asking me a bunch of questions, and I thought some of you might be interested, too. If you have any specific questions, please ask me and I’ll write something up. The black box will always show the most recent two, but the rest are always there, too.

The third thing will be any important new about this site itself, like the comment error thing (which I still haven’t figured out). And stuff like this will go there in the future, too.

Just one of the stunning masterpieces on this record. I just got a new copy (as my old one was a dying cassette tape), and it's giving me a whole new lease on life. If you haven't listened to it in a while, dig it out and feel good about the world again.

the wit of winston churchill.

For example:

Churchill was known to drain a glass or two and, after one particularly convivial evening, he chanced to encounter Miss Bessie Braddock, a Socialist member of the House of Commons, who, upon seeing his condition, said, "Winston, you're drunk." Mustering all his dignity, Churchill drew himself up to his full height, cocked an eyebrow and rejoined, "Shove it up your ass, you ugly cunt."

This photo gallery of last night's father and son attack on a Royals' first base coach seems reminiscent of a Calvin Klein ad campaign to me.

Maybe it is. Here's hoping that the CK brand is taking their marketing of ironic white trash chic to an all new performance art level.

A Couple of Interesting/Great Things from the Much Ballyhoo'd {by me} Epitonic.com

I just discovered

https://www.epitonic.com less than a month ago, and I can't remember how my life was before it, it's that good.
Because it seems to be so vast in its coolness, allow me to share a couple of starting points for yall...

Their jazz section is incredible, with special attention going to the

Atavistic pages, look for any of the Unheard Music Series releases Atavistic has done for 2 years now, some AMAZING and often quite sqonky free jazz there.

Also, check out the

Elders of Zion, one of the more interesting of their "field recordings" section, for some heady/funny noise.

Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner)

If you get a chance, go see this movie. It's three hours long, has an all-Inuit cast, and it's in Inuktitut with English subtitles. And it's great.

Duck and Cover

The Prelinger Archives are now online. This is one of the biggest blows to corporate productivity since someone asked "Hey, Bob. Can we scan this girl's hoochie?"

"Prelinger Archives is a collection of over 45,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films. Since its beginning in 1983, its goal has been to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere. Included are films produced by and for many hundreds of important US corporations, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, community and interest groups, and educational institutions."

By the way Tom; there is NO British version of this from the BBfuckingC with a cuter host.

Record of the Week:

Philip Glass: Koyaanisqatsi

I know alot of people dislike Philip Glass, perhaps some of those people are here today. I really DO like him, and this record is one of my favorites of his. In fact, believe it or not, it would be a so-called "desert island" record for me. I won't bore yall by describing it, I'm sure you all know what Philip Glass sounds like.

The movie for which this is the soundtrack, like the music, is also an acquired taste; some people call it a masterwork, others find it quite annoying. I recommend seeing it at least once. Here's some press from it:

Ko.yaa.nis.qatsi (from the Hopi language), n. 1. Crazy life. 2. Life in turmoil. 3. Life
disintegrating. 4. Life out of balance. 5. A state of life that calls for another way of living.

THE HOPI PROPHECIES
If we dig precious things from the land,We will invite disaster.

Near the day of Purification, there will be cobwebs Spun back and forth in the sky.

A container of ashes might one day be thrown From the sky, which could burn the land And boil the oceans.

trading spaces: 2nd rate knock off

mike got it wrong. the halfhour show 'changing rooms' on bbc america has a cuter host. also, the designers - while they're comically bad and annoying - don't make you involuntarily throw missles at the tv the whole time. plus, a halfanhour is sufficient.

and the host is cuter.

Trading Spaces

Since Phil is letting out his dirty Bjork secret I feel compelled to come clean on my dirty obsession.
I'm thoroughly addicted to Trading Spaces on The Learning Channel. If you haven't seen it you really should. People making over a room in each others' houses with the help of a questionable designer and a carpenter on crank.
The episode destined to become an urban legend someday was when the designer covered someone's living room walls in hay. She was going for that funky wallpaper you see at bad tiki theme bars, but it was out of budget. So, hey, why not just use hay?
Hi-LAR-ious!

I can't believe Phil likes Bjork. What a pussy.
