James Lileks on the new WTC designs

If the original WTC consisted of two hands banging out an obvious C chord, this is the visual equivalent of dropping a cat on the keyboards.

The THINK design (the one with the lattice work) seems to have a recreation of a 747 slamming into the buiildings. I guess it's supposed to be a connecting walkway, but I think it's more of "aim here" for Allah Airlines.

Americans are funny. Our two biggest structures get knocked over by highjacked planes and we respond by building two even bigger structures and the bombing of Iraq - as if that will calm things down.

How long do you give those new buildings before they are blown up again? 2 years? I guess building a bunch of smaller buildings on the same site would be perceived as cowardly, but at least it wouldn't be dumb.

Egads, how ugly both of these are. I have an idea I think is far better. Now understand that this is just a crude design, but I propose this to fill the space where the twin towers once stood
