Recommended Movie of the Week

This is an excellent documentary of The Weather Underground, with great archival footage and contemporary interviews with the main players. It even has a good sndtrk with, oddly enough, Aphex Twin and Sonic Youth. It's playing in many cities (sorry Icee, no Alaska). Paul & I were the only people in the theatre last night, but hopefully people are seeing this. Kong I especially thought of you 'cuz you've always been so underground and radical.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

Let's see..... Dell has laid off hundreds of Austinites by moving ther customer service support to India and manufacturing to Asia , and Whole Foods actually had to give people raises when the hourly wage went up to $5.15. More tidbits of genius can be found here. The Chronicle can deeply inhale my farts for all eternity.

S M U in the national news

because we're all first amendment junkies, some of you may want to discuss SMU's blip in the national news radar this week regarding affirmative action and free speech, and you may have questions, reactions, or may want my reaction to same.

but because i'm tired and lazy, you'll have to ask me specifically to do so, otherwise i'll assume no-one cares- an entirely propper response- and i'll go back to sleep.

Hey Whole Foodsters,

If any of you know how to contact Philip Sansone, previous owner of Austin’s Book People and long-time friend of John Mackey, please send me that address/way to reach him. Even if you think it may be a tangential method of contact, I'd like to try.

This link tells of the murder of Philip’s daughter Kali, who all of us Book Peoplers got to know and love during our/her time there. She was a really sweet, cute kid, so nice and happy, laughed at EVERYTHING.

Having been through a death of a young loved one in my own family this year, I really would like to send Philip a condolence of some kind. Damn what a drag.

Thanks guys!

For the Smartypants Inside All of Us

How to by You - An Experiment in Intuition

Every now and then, a new topic will be posted. It could be anything from 'How to eat peas.' to 'How to build an areoplane.' No answer is wrong and it's up to you, the player, to explain how to do it.

Hey Kong! How's your Kongdom?

Kong-

a glimmer of a shred of a mite of a spec of an atom of memory just dislodged from my tiny brain (such as it is), something I remember you talking about, I think it was a band you saw, or perhaps a fake band from the anals of You & Gibby & Paul:

The Againsters?

Something about, was it The Again-sters, or was it The Against-ers? Does any of this make sense to you?

I just got this in my email, weird..

Former Texas Governor Ann Richards, a savvy politician and longtime advocate of civil rights and equal opportunities for women and minorities, will deliver the 6th Annual Louise B. Raggio Lecture in Women’s Studies at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Wesley Hall at Highland Park United Methodist Church. A dessert reception will immediately follow the dialogue between Richards and Regina Montoya, attorney and past national president of Girls Incorporated.

SMU students, faculty, and staff are invited to pick up a complimentary ticket to the event with their SMU ID at the Mane Desk in Hughes-Trigg. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, until Oct. 2.

In 1990, Richards -- known for her acerbic wit -- became the first woman elected to the state's highest office in more than 50 years. As governor, she promoted government efficiency by authorizing comprehensive audits of every state agency and was widely acclaimed for her unprecedented appointments of women and minorities to major posts. She also focused on education by introducing site-based management to put more power in the hands of the parents and teachers at the local level. During her administration a state lottery was approved and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was passed.

For more information on the lecture, entitled “How My Drunken Dyke Ass Loss of the Governor’s Race to a Fucking Retard Has Brought the World to the Brink of Annhiliation”, call 214.

Questions about stuff

Hey computer geeks, let me you ask you some questions. How much does a domain name usually cost per year? For example, what if i wanted matteblack.com, a small webpage, and also wanted email , like matteblack@matteblack.com. Do these things exist at a reasonable price? I'm dumb on these matters. Where would I go to initiate such a thing?

how smart would jesus be?

From the Creation Science fair.

1st Place: "My Uncle Is A Man Named Steve (Not A Monkey)"
Cassidy Turnbull (grade 5) presented her uncle, Steve. She also showed photographs of monkeys and invited fairgoers to note the differences between her uncle and the monkeys. She tried to feed her uncle bananas, but he declined to eat them. Cassidy has conclusively shown that her uncle is no monkey.

Honorable Mention:
"God Made Kitty" - Sally Reister (grade 3)
"The Bible Says Creation" - Aaron Kent (grade 5)
>"Pokemon Prove Evolutionism Is False" - Paul Sanborn (grade 4)

Re: RE-TG re:

First of all, our pal Genesis P, who has fueled several discussions here in our fair and balanced community, not only has a new and much better website, but has apparently also invented a third gender for hermself, to which I say right on to that!

But let’s get down to business:

and revisit the topic of the Throbbing Gristle reunion show in a serious way, i.e. as persons seriously considering attending this weekend event. [previous discussion link]
The tickets are sold not as individual general admission like your normal rock show, but as resort chalets, for 5, 6, and 7 occupants. The cost, in british pounds, for these chalets are £665, £798, and £931, respectively.

Now let us suppose that Kong, Matte, Icee McFreeze, Hoyt, and Dick Spetic all decide they want to go. The total cost, in dollars, for their chalet would be $1,054.55, or $210.91. That is entirely affordable it seems to me, and an amount that I could spend TODAY.

Of course there are other expenses, notably roundtrip tickets, passport, food, rail pass and/or other transportation. Another issue, if we continue or pretend playtime game of supposing that the above named are going, is that the full amount would need to be charged to one credit card. I for one could NOT charge this amount, but I wonder, are there any of you that could/would? Perhaps someone has a cc that would award them frequent flier miles equal to the dollar amount…I sure wish I did! I would gladly paypal any of you my portion of that amount at a moments notice.

Anyway, this seems “doable” or affordable I think, and it is my hope that by breaking it down this way, I could perhaps convince four of you to get as stupidly excited as I am about the whole RE~TG fiasco!

So... any takers?

Buy My Old Car

This just makes me laugh. The engine is actually only running on five cylinders, the interior is carpetless and torn (you can see my handy duct tape door panel in one of the pics), the body is trashed and will need LOTS of rust repair and straightening to paint, and the floorboards are about to rust through in places. I donated this car to the Salvation Army about three months ago because it wouldn't sell, and this guy apparently hasn't touched it.

Maybe I should contact him and let him buy all of the stuff I stripped off of it before I donated it?...
