First Amendment no big deal, students say
The way many high school students see it, government censorship of newspapers may not be a bad thing, and flag burning is hardly protected free speech.
... when told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high school students said it goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories.
Well, that's just fucking great. I would say something like "And these are the people that are going to lead our nation one day" or something equally old and bitter, but they actually won't. No, apparently our nation will be lead by a succession of Bush family scions. Bush, the family that may well succeed where even the Kennedys couldn't.

The doctor will see you now...
In the past, moviegoers swayed to the magic of American Graffiti...
Swooned to the charms of American Beauty...
Thrilled to the terrors of American Psycho...
Now it's time to brace yourselves for...
Okay Lang - stick this in your she-male pipe and smoke it!
(One suspects this may be one of those films where the best parts ended up on the cutting room floor...)

I approve.
Now this is an example of thinking under pressure.

PETA Alert
Yep, those crazy Japanese are torturing cats again...
(Click here and scroll down to view photographic evidence of this unrepentant barbarism)...
As a proud and loving cat owner, I must stress that I am not endorsing this behavior...

GRIMJACK
If tarbox still checks in here, he'll understand how excited I am right now. I don't know if anyone else will.
If you've never heard of GrimJack, he was title character of one of the best comic books from the '80s. Sort of a space-pirate / time-travel / voodoo / Illuminati / noir thing. Just excellent work. Along with American Flagg! by Howard Chaykin, this was the the book that I read without fail until the publisher (First Comics) went under. To me, those two books were right at the top of the indy publishing field at the time. The fact that his original creators are the ones reviving the series makes it all the better.
From the publisher's web site:
At last—GrimJack returns to the ever-shifting city of Cynosure, and creators John Ostrander and Timothy Truman reunite to tell the tale! There’s a firefight in The Pit and GrimJack is in the middle of the conflagration. His friends at Cadre have hired a beautiful vampire assassin to take him out. How does GrimJack save his neck—and who winds up in possession of Munden’s Bar, the nexus of all realities?
Order direct from IDW Publishing, or check your local comics store. The first issue is scheduled for January 31.
IDW will also be publishing the entire original GrimJack series in a single bound edition, both trade paperback and hardbound.

THE HASSELHOFFIAN RECURSION
UPDATE: 1/19/2005, 7:15PM
First and foremost, HELLO, NICE INTERNET PEOPLES! IT'S A PLEASURE TO SEE YOU.
Second, I didn't make this, and if I had thought it would get this kind of attention, I would have made that clear. I found it on another site where people post funny things they find. I guess that's pretty much all web sites now, right? But the particular site I'm talking about would say [this is good].
Third, apparently the creator of the Hasselhoffian Recursion has chosen to out himself way down the page at about comment 104 or so, going by the rolls-off-the-tongue sobriquet of "the space invaders are smoking grass". So thanks, tsiasg! You've created a masterpiece.
Here's his b3ta profile

Creative Commies
So, Bill Gates equates free culture with communism (Posted on Boing Boing), and lots of people react with appropriate propaganda, including a nice $5 t-shirt. A few more links at Preshrunk

RIP Will Eisner
Eisner was a remarkable artist and pioneer. Comics and Sequential Art should be required reading in art schools.
